Types of Electric Vehicles

A quick overview of current EVs in the market

Battery Electric Vehicles
(BEVs)

BEVs use electricity stored in a battery pack to power an electric motor, which drives the wheels of the vehicle. The battery pack is recharged by plugging the vehicle into an external power source, such as a wall outlet or a charging station.

One of the main benefits of BEVs is that they produce zero emissions while in operation, making them a clean and environmentally friendly transportation option. They also tend to have lower operating costs compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, as electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline and BEVs require less maintenance.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
(PHEVs)

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a type of hybrid electric vehicle that combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery pack that can be recharged by plugging it into an external power source.

PHEVs have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine, and can operate in either all-electric mode, using electricity from the battery pack to power the vehicle, or hybrid mode, using a combination of the electric motor and gasoline engine. In hybrid mode, the vehicle can switch between the two power sources depending on driving conditions and the state of the battery pack.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles
(HEVs)

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are vehicles that use a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor to power the vehicle. The electric motor is powered by a battery pack, which is recharged through regenerative braking and the operation of the gasoline engine.

HEVs are designed to use both the electric motor and the gasoline engine efficiently, depending on driving conditions and the state of the battery pack. For example, in stop-and-go city driving, the electric motor may be used more often, while on the highway the gasoline engine may be used more often.
